monday.com Alternatives: 8 Tools Compared on Price, Seats and AI

monday.com is one of the most flexible work tools you can buy. Its boards bend to almost any process, and its dashboards are among the best in the category. Teams still look around, usually for one of four reasons: paid plans that start at 3 seats, Gantt and timeline views that sit on the Standard plan, AI that runs on monthly credits, and no team chat, so Slack or Teams stays open next to it. This guide compares eight alternatives on exactly those points, with prices checked on each vendor’s own pricing page on 20 October 2026.

A note on fairness: we make PeerBie, which is one of the eight. We say where the others are stronger, including where monday.com beats all of us.

The short answer: which monday.com alternative fits which team

  • The closest swap, lowest price per seat: ClickUp. Its free plan has no member limit, but it takes time to learn.
  • Clear structure for projects and goals: Asana.
  • Your process is really a database: Airtable.
  • Your team thinks in spreadsheets: Smartsheet.
  • Heavy planning and resource management: Wrike.
  • Docs and wiki first, projects second: Notion.
  • A simple board for a small team, free: Trello.
  • Tasks, team chat, meetings and goals in one app, with an AI assistant that turns meetings into tasks: PeerBie.

Why teams look for a monday.com alternative

If monday.com works for your team, stay: switching tools has a real cost. These are the points that most often push teams to compare.

1. Small teams pay for at least 3 seats

The free plan is for up to 2 seats. Paid plans start at 3 seats: Basic is $9, Standard $12 and Pro $19 per seat a month billed annually, or $12, $14 and $24 billed monthly. A two-person team that outgrows the free plan pays for three.

2. The views most teams want are on Standard

Timeline and Gantt views, the calendar view, guest access and 250 automation and 250 integration actions a month start on Standard. Basic is mostly boards. In practice, many teams that compare on the Basic price end up on Standard.

3. AI runs on credits

Each paid plan comes with a monthly AI credit allowance (shown on the pricing page as 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 credits a month for a 10-seat team on Basic, Standard and Pro), and you buy more when they run out. The AI meeting notetaker is listed from Standard. Credits are fine for occasional use, but harder to budget if your team uses AI every day.

4. Conversations happen in another app

monday.com has updates and comments on each item, which work well for discussing that item. There is no team chat or direct messaging, so most teams keep Slack or Microsoft Teams, and decisions end up split between the two.

The eight alternatives, one by one

ClickUp: the closest swap

ClickUp does most of what monday.com does (lists, boards, Gantt, docs, dashboards, automations) and adds team chat. The Free Forever plan allows unlimited members with 60 MB of storage. On 20 October 2026 its pricing page showed two line-ups side by side: Core $9 and Business $17 per user a month billed yearly ($12 and $25 monthly), and an older Unlimited $7 and Business $12, so check which one you are offered.

Watch out for: a long setup and learning curve, and AI in layers: pooled credits in every plan, plus Brain AI ($9 per user) or Everything AI ($28 per user) on top.

Asana: structure out of the box

Asana gives teams a clear, opinionated way to run projects: polished list, board, timeline and Gantt views from Starter, rules and forms, and goals and portfolios on Advanced. Starter is $10.99 and Advanced $24.99 per user a month billed annually ($13.49 and $30.49 monthly).

Watch out for: goals and workload sit on Advanced, seats are sold in blocks once you pass 5 users, and AI is counted per request. We cover this in detail in our guide to Asana alternatives.

Airtable: when your process is a database

If your boards are really linked tables (clients, orders, content, inventory), Airtable models relationships better than any board tool, and you can build simple apps on top. There is a free plan; Team is $20 and Business $45 per user a month billed annually.

Watch out for: it is the most expensive per seat on this list, and you build the system yourself.

Smartsheet: for teams that live in spreadsheets

Smartsheet feels familiar to anyone who runs projects in Excel: grids with formulas, plus Gantt, board and calendar views. Pro is $9 per member a month billed yearly ($12 monthly) for up to 10 members; Business is $19 ($24 monthly) with a 3-member minimum. There is no free plan, only a 30-day trial.

Watch out for: it is a tracking tool more than a place to talk.

Wrike: planning-heavy teams

Wrike suits PMO-style teams that need Gantt charts, resource planning and cross-project reporting. There is a free plan; Team is $10 per user a month for 2 to 15 users, and Business is $25 for 5 to 200 users.

Watch out for: more than a small team needs, with plans tied to team-size bands.

Notion: docs first

Notion is the best place to write things down, and its databases can hold light project tracking. Plus is $10 and Business $20 per member a month (less with yearly billing). Full Notion AI, including AI Meeting Notes, starts on Business.

Watch out for: you design your project system yourself, and there is no team chat.

Trello: the simplest board

If you mostly use monday.com as a kanban board, Trello may be all you need. It is free for up to 10 collaborators per workspace; Standard is $5 and Premium $10 per user a month billed annually, and Premium adds timeline, calendar, table and dashboard views.

Watch out for: once you need goals, reporting or chat, you add other tools.

One flat price instead: Basecamp charges per account rather than per person: $29 to $99 a month for up to 5 to 15 users, or $199 a month billed annually for unlimited users. It has to-dos, message boards and Campfire chat, but no goals, no workflow builder and no built-in AI.

How PeerBie handles what monday.com leaves out

PeerBie is a work platform that puts tasks, goals, team chat, a company feed and meetings in one app, with an AI assistant, Lucy, available as an add-on. Here is what that means in practice, and where it falls short.

Projects and tasks

Projects come in list, board, calendar and Gantt views, with a Reports tab per project, with recurring tasks, milestones, start/pause time tracking, timesheets and project dashboards. Project financials work out cost from tracked time × hourly rate and warn you at 80% and 100% of budget. No-code workflows with forms, stages and triggers cover repeating processes; the free plan includes up to 5. See projects and tasks.

Conversations next to the work

Team chat, direct messages, a company feed with posts, polls and events, and Huddles (drop-in audio rooms with screen share on the web) are included on every plan, including the free one. For many teams that is one less subscription than monday.com plus Slack.

Goals on every paid plan

Goals and OKRs run from company to department, team and person, on Basic and up. Key results can move from linked projects or check-ins, and on Pro from connected tools such as HubSpot and Stripe. See Goals & OKRs.

Meetings that end in assigned tasks

You can create Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams meetings from PeerBie on every plan. With the Lucy add-on, a silent note-taker joins the calendar meetings you choose and files the summary, decisions and action items; you check them and they become tasks with owners and due dates. See Meetings & notes.

AI without credits

Lucy and AI employees come as one add-on: $20 per user a month on Pro and Enterprise, with no credits to count. Lucy works with your tasks, Gmail or Outlook, calendar and meeting notes, and asks before she sends an email or deletes anything. AI employees propose work each morning and act after you approve. See pricing.

Where PeerBie is weaker than monday.com (and others)

  • No timeline or Gantt view. monday.com (from Standard), ClickUp, Asana, Smartsheet and Wrike have one. If your plans run on Gantt charts, that matters.
  • Less freedom to build. If you design your own boards, column types and dashboards for every process, monday.com is more flexible.
  • A smaller integration list: 30+ integrations with real actions, against marketplaces with hundreds of apps.
  • No desktop app: PeerBie runs on the web, iPhone and Android. Huddles are web only.
  • Full AI costs more than monday.com Pro. PeerBie Pro plus Lucy is $35 per user a month billed annually. If you only need occasional AI help, monday.com’s included credits may be enough.
  • A younger product with a smaller community, fewer templates and fewer consultants who know it.

What a 10-person team would pay

List prices billed annually, as of 20 October 2026. We use 10 people because every tool below can bill exactly 10 seats.

OptionPer user / monthPer year (10 users)
monday.com Standard (adds Gantt and timeline)$12$1,440
monday.com Pro$19$2,280
ClickUp Core$9$1,080
Asana Starter$10.99$1,319
PeerBie Basic (includes chat and goals)$10$1,200
PeerBie Pro$15$1,800
PeerBie Pro + Lucy AI add-on$35$4,200
Taxes, discounts and add-ons not included. AI credits beyond the included allowance are extra on monday.com and ClickUp; on PeerBie the AI price is the add-on.

The honest reading: without AI, PeerBie Basic costs less than monday.com Standard and includes chat and goals, but has no Gantt view. With the Lucy add-on, PeerBie costs more than monday.com Pro, and what you pay for is the note-taker, the AI employees and an assistant without credits.

How to choose: five questions

  1. Do you need Gantt charts and dependencies? Then shortlist ClickUp, Asana, Smartsheet or Wrike, or stay on monday.com Standard.
  2. Is your process really a database? Airtable, or stay on monday.com.
  3. Do you want to retire a separate chat app? Look at ClickUp, Basecamp or PeerBie.
  4. Do meetings create most of your work? Check whether action items become assigned tasks without copying and pasting.
  5. How much AI will you really use? Occasional use fits included credits; daily use is easier to budget with a flat per-user price.

Switching from monday.com without losing work

  1. Start with one team and one live board, not the whole account.
  2. Export your boards to Excel before you start, and keep monday.com read-only for a month.
  3. Rebuild recurring items and automations first; they carry most of the routine.
  4. Agree where conversations now happen, so the old updates thread does not keep running in parallel.
  5. Run your next three meetings in the new tool and check that the action items end up as owned tasks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best monday.com alternative?

It depends on why you are leaving. For the closest swap at a lower price, ClickUp. For clear project structure and goals, Asana. For database-style work, Airtable. For spreadsheet-style tracking, Smartsheet. For heavy planning, Wrike. For tasks, team chat, meetings and goals in one app with an AI assistant, PeerBie.

Is there a free alternative to monday.com?

Yes. ClickUp Free Forever allows unlimited members with 60 MB of storage. Trello is free for up to 10 collaborators per workspace. Airtable, Wrike and Notion have free plans. PeerBie Starter is free for up to 5 people with 3 projects, 1,500 tasks, team chat and up to 5 workflows. monday.com’s own free plan is for up to 2 seats.

Why does monday.com cost more than the Basic price suggests?

Three reasons: paid plans start at 3 seats, timeline and Gantt views, guest access and most automations start on Standard ($12 per seat a month billed annually), and AI runs on a monthly credit allowance that you top up when it runs out.

Does monday.com have team chat?

monday.com has updates and comments on each item, but no team chat or direct messages, so most teams keep Slack or Microsoft Teams alongside it. ClickUp, Basecamp and PeerBie include team chat.

Which monday.com alternative has AI without credits?

Most tools now meter AI: monday.com and ClickUp use credits, Asana counts requests, and Notion bills its agents in credits. PeerBie sells its AI, Lucy, as one add-on at $20 per user a month on Pro and Enterprise, with no credits.

Try it with your own work

PeerBie has a free plan for up to 5 people and a 14-day Pro trial that includes the Lucy add-on, no credit card needed. Or walk around the live demo workspace without signing up.
